Occupational Health: Frequently Asked Questions
What is occupational health?
Occupational Health (OH) is a medical speciality that focuses on the relationships between work and health.
Occupational health providers support workplace compliance with health, safety and legal OH&S regulations.
Core OH&S services include:
2. Occupational health assessments (management referrals) to advise on safe return to work, fitness for work, workplace adjustments, temporary or permanent.
3. Safety-critical health checks.
4. HSE-compliant health surveillance under vibration regulations (HAVS), asbestos, ionising radiation, lead, and COSHH.
5. Ill-health retirement and other services.
What’s included in occupational health assessments?
Our in-person OH assessments for employers in Bristol or remote OH assessments cover fitness for work, return to work planning, advice on workplace adjustments, and the applicability of the Equality Act 2010.
What is pre-employment health screening?
Pre-placement assessments (also known as a new starter or pre-employment screening) are medical evaluations of fitness for work. They are undertaken after a conditional job offer in compliance with the Equality Act 2010.
The assessments may confirm fitness for work and recommend workplace adjustments for the Employer’s consideration. In rare cases, OH may advise against a particular employment if health and safety may be at risk.
We offer a simple, 3-step online pre-employment health screening:
① Online questionnaire → ② Medical review → ③ New Starter Certificate Advice.
How fast is remote pre-employment assessment?
24-48 hours after online booking (routine cases). In complex cases, we can offer an OH physician consultation within 1-2 days (remotely, in Bristol or Chepstow).

Is occupational health mandatory in the UK? Do I have to attend an OH appointment?
Under UK law, occupational health (OH) assessments for non-safety-critical work are voluntary. However, employers may request workers to attend in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which requires workers to cooperate in health and safety matters. The attendance may be required contractually.
In safety-critical roles, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAW) requires employee cooperation for workplace safety. Refusal might lead to HSE violations or dismissal if there are substantial health and safety risks (e.g., a forklift truck driver with epilepsy).
What not to say to occupational health in the UK? What if I lie to occupational health?
Honesty is important in occupational health assessments because it helps the clinician understand your health and give safe advice. Being open about conditions like epilepsy or diabetes allows us to recommend adjustments that protect you and others at work.
Hiding important information can put you and colleagues at risk, especially in high‑risk roles. It may also affect how your employer manages health and safety or applies their conduct policies.
OH assessments are medically confidential and focus on advice rather than detailed medical history.
You can review the OH report before it is shared with your employer and you can withhold consent, unless there is a serious safety concern. Health information is shared only on a need‑to‑know basis in line with data protection law. The Equality Act 2010 protects you from discrimination because of health conditions.
