How to prepare for your DVLA D4 examination
If you are in South Wales, we have a D4 driver medical near you
What to expect during your medical
The appointment will take approximately 20 minutes. The doctor will review your medical history, check your blood pressure, weight and height, examine your eyesight, undertake a brief examination, and complete your D4 DVLA form.
You will need to post the completed D4 form to the DVLA, who will make the decision about your driving licence. If required, they may need to consult your GP or a specialist.
When will you need your D4 Driver Medical?
HGV drivers with medical problems
Your responsibilities as a HGV/LGV driver
Being fit to drive to DVLA Group 2 standard means that your physical and mental health allows you to control your HGV/LGV safely at all times. Medical fitness is crucial because of the vehicle size and weight and the long hours you spend driving. This is why the medical standards for HGV/LGV drivers are stricter than those for car drivers (Group 1).
Some conditions affect your fitness to LGV/HGV to DVLA Group 2 standard. Learn more about common medical conditions and fitness to work as a lorry driver:

You must tell DVLA if you have a ‘notifiable condition’ using the GOV.UK website.

✱ Sleep apnoea
✱ Epilepsy
✱ Stroke
✱ Glaucoma
If you have questions, contact your GP or occupational health.
What if you are not fit to drive?
Occupational health support
If you are unfit to drive, your manager may refer you for an occupational health assessment to determine if you may be fit for non-driving work.
Our occupational health physician would review your health, treatment, prognosis, driving, and other job demands and give your management OH advice. If available, we may assess your fitness for adjusted, for example, non-safety-critical duties.
For example, a driver with unstable diabetes may be fit for non-driving work, e.g., lighter logistical or administrative duties, CCTV monitoring, or quality assurance while waiting for the DVLA decision to restore their driving licence.
Or a driver with substantial, long-term impairment after a stroke may be a candidate for redeployment or ill-health retirement.
Your manager may consider our advice. If you are protected by the disability provisions of the Equality Act 2010, the employer will need to consider the adjustments and decide if they are reasonable.
Your manager may book your Occupational Health Assessment here.
