Wind turbine technicians work in demanding environments, often at significant heights, in confined spaces (nacelles), or remote locations. You need medical examination to confirm that you are:

  • Physically and mentally fit to work in these demanding environments
  • Able to work in remote onshore and offshore locations and harsh weather conditions
  • Can safely travel to and from the site by boat or helicopter and self-evacuate in case of an emergency
  • Self-evacuate safely in an emergency.

This examination is required for anyone working on wind farm sites, including:

  • Wind Turbine Technicians (Onshore and Offshore)
  • Blade Repair, Maintenance, and Service Crews
  • Construction, Commissioning, and High Voltage Engineers
  • Rope Access Technicians and similar professions.

In line with the 2025 EI/OEUK guideline (EI 3583), wind turbine medicals must be carried out by doctors registered with OEUK (Offshore Energies UK).

✔ Complete the confidential Wind Turbine Worker Questionnaire (emailed after booking).

✔ Bring a valid photo ID, current prescription, glasses/contact lenses and your previous RUK certificate.

✔ For the Chester Step Test: wear comfortable clothing and trainers. Avoid heavy meals, alcohol and smoking for 6 hours before the appointment.

Reschedule if you have a new cough, fever or other acute illness.

A standard appointment usually takes 45–60 minutes.

✔ The doctor will review your medical history and job role.

✔ You will have a physical examination, including weight, height, blood pressure, vision, grip strength and musculoskeletal assessment.

✔ You will have the Chester Step Test. This is a physical fitness test where you step onto a box to a set beat. It measures your aerobic stamina for climbing and evacuation.

In some cases (e.g., type 1 diabetes, significant obesity, uncontrolled blood pressure), the doctor will require a letter from the GP or specialist and additional tests. These services incur extra fees, which we will discuss with you before proceeding.

Depending on the findings, the examining doctor may issue:

Unrestricted Certificate valid for 2 years. Issued on the same day if you meet all fitness standards.

Restricted Certificate valid for less than 2 years to ensure monitoring of a stable condition (e.g., controlled high blood pressure or diabetes).

Certificate of Temporary Unfitness issued if additional information or treatment is required. A certificate may be issued once the condition is controlled

Certificate of Permanent Unfitness issued if you have a condition not compatible with wind turbine work (e.g., significant cardiac failure, sevre lung disease, or significantly impaired mobility).

Medical confidentiality: Employers receive only the Certificate of Fitness for Wind Turbine Work. Medical details remain confidential and are not shared without your written consent. All records are handled by authorised staff only in compliance with GMC, GMP, and GDPR 2018 requirements.

Note on 2025 Standards (RUK / GWO/ EI): Wind turbine medicals have been known as RUK Medicals (RenewablesUK) Medicals or GWO Medicals (Global Wind Organisation). In 2025, the UK Energy Institute consolidated the EI, RUK and GWO standards under the current 2025 guideline (EI 3583). This has been supported by Offshore Energies UK.

Occupational Health Physician Bristol South Wales

We have over 10 years of experience in RUK, OGUK / OEUK and other safety‑critical examinations.

Dr Greg Palka is qualified to conduct EI 3583-compliant wind turbine medicals under the latest 2025 guidelines.

As a registered OEUK examining doctor with extensive experience in Aberdeen, he undertook multiple assessments and supported the offshore and renewable sectors. His background includes emergency evacuation planning and supporting safety-critical workers in remote environments.

If you do not meet the standards, we will explain the medical reasons clearly.

Redeployment: Your employer may be able to redeploy you to a non-safety-critical onshore role.

Your manager may refer you for an occupational health assessment. This will provide in-depth medical review and detailed recommendations for workplace adjustments, alternative duties, or supported return to work programmes.

Where can I get a Wind Turbine (RUK / GWO) medical in Bristol and South Wales?

We run Energy Institute (EI 3583) compliant wind turbine medicals at two dedicated clinics, perfectly positioned for technicians across the South West and Wales:

  1. Bristol Clinic (Almondsbury, M4/M5 Interchange): Ideal for technicians in Gloucester, Weston-super-Mare, Avonmouth, Bath, and Swindon.
  2. Chepstow Clinic (M48): The most convenient location for South Wales, serving Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Cwmbran, and the Forest of Dean.

Both clinics offer free parking, full Chester Step Test facilities on-site and same-day certificates.

Do I need a wind turbine medical?

Most employers require this specific medical if you work on onshore or offshore wind farms. It is essential if you:

  • Climb vertical ladders (e.g., inside turbine towers).
  • Work in confined spaces (e.g., nacelles).
  • Travel by boat or helicopter to offshore sites (e.g., Bristol Channel, North Sea).

Typical Roles: Wind Turbine Technicians & Service Engineers; Blade Repair & Rope Access Technicians; Construction, Installation & Commissioning Crews; NDT Inspectors & Site Supervisors.

Is this the same as a “RUK” or “GWO” Wind Turbine Medical?

Yes. The terminology has recently changed, but the requirement is the same.

Old Name: RenewableUK (RUK) or Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Medical.

New 2025 Standard: Energy Institute EI 3583 (2025).

Our medicals are fully compliant with the new EI / OEUK 3583 standard. This means your certificate replaces the old “RUK” medical and is accepted by GWO training providers and major wind operators globally (including Orsted, Siemens Gamesa, and SSE).

What happens during the EI 3583 / RUK / GWO Medical?

The examination confirms you are physically capable of self-rescue in a remote environment. It takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

The assessment includes:

  1. Medical History: Review of any conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart issues).
  2. Physical Stats: Height, weight, BMI, pulse, and blood pressure.
  3. Sensory Checks: Vision (near/distance/colour) and hearing check.
  4. Musculoskeletal: Grip strength test and joint flexibility check for climbing.
  5. Aerobic Fitness: The Chester Step Test.

Certificate: If you meet the standard, you will leave with your Wind Turbine Medical Certificate in hand (digital copy also emailed immediately).

What is the Chester Step Test? (And why do I need it?)

The Chester Step Test is the industry-standard method for measuring your aerobic fitness (VO2 Max).

  1. You step onto and off a box (height set by your age/gender) to a metronome beat. The pace increases slightly every 2 minutes until you reach a set heart rate or effort level.
  2. We measure your heart rate recovery. You generally need a VO2 Max of 35 ml/kg/min to pass (reflecting the stamina needed to climb a turbine)

Preparation: Please bring a gym kit and trainers. Do not smoke, drink caffeine, or eat a heavy meal for 2 hours beforehand.

If your VO2 Max is below the required limit, we cannot issue the certificate. We will offer advice and invite you back for a re-test.

Do you provide wind turbine medicals compliant with RUK (RenewableUK) and GWO (Global Wind Organisation)?

Yes, the EI/OEUK wind turbine medicals have replaced RUK medicals in 2025, and are compliant with the GWO standards.

Is my wind turbine certificate valid internationally ?

Yes, EI 3583 certificates are internationally recognised for onshore and offshore wind sectors.

What is the cost (Bristol & Chepstow)?

We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees:

Standard Appointment: £245 (Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:00)

Urgent / Out-of-Hours: £445 (Evenings 17:00–20:00 & Saturdays)

The fee includes the full medical, Chester Step Test, and certification. Additional charges only apply if we need to purchase external GP reports.

Do I need a separate “Fit to Train” or OEUK Offshore Medical?

Please check with your employer or the operator.

The EI 3583 (RUK) certificate is valid for onshore and offshore wind turbines.

Notwithstanding this, some Operators require an OEUK Offshore Medical (formerly OGUK) if you need to travel offshore by helicopter or boat.
If your training includes CA-EBS (compressed air) in-water survival, you need a Fit to Train certificate.

Good News: We can combine these. You can add an OEUK Medical or Fit to Train to your appointment for a discounted “add-on” fee.

Can I get a last-minute appointment?

Yes. We know site access often depends on your certificate. We keep urgent evening and Saturday slots open specifically for urgent medicals.
