What is pre-employment health screening and why is it used?

Pre-employment health screening, or pre-placement assessment, is an OH assessment of a confidential medical health questionnaire. It is offered after the offer was made (pre-placement) to ensure a new employee is fit for their role. It helps employers comply with the data protection and the Equality Act 2010, which prohibits health-based discrimination and mandates consideration of workplace adjustments and fitness for work based on medical advice. Our online questionnaire makes this process quick and efficient.

Is pre-placement screening mandatory in the UK?

  1. Non-safety-critical work. Pre-placement health checks are not legally required for non-safety-critical roles. However, pre-placement health assessments are strongly recommended for all roles (under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which require workplace health risk assessment).
Pre-employment screening gives the employer suitable information about the candidate’s health, fitness for the role and recommendations on adjustment. On this basis, the employer makes an informed decision about the candidate’s suitability. This is particularly important in psychologically, manually or cognitively demanding work.
  2. Work in safety-critical or hazardous environments requires specific fitness for work medicals, e.g., statutory asbestos health surveillance, HAVS medicals, OEUK/OGUK offshore medicals, D4 driver’s medicals or COSHH health surveillance.

How will I receive my results/report?

Reports will be available on our secure portal or as a password-protected email attachment.

Some statutory certificates (e.g., asbestos or D4 DVLA form) are paper-based.
