What are medical examinations for wind turbine workers?
Wind turbine medicals have been known as RUK (RenewablesUK) medicals or GWO (Global Wind Organisation) medicals.
Since June 2025, the UK Energy Institute/OEUK wind turbine medicals have replaced RUK medicals. They remain compliant with the GWO standards.
The Wind Turbine medicals are required to confirm that workers are physically and mentally fit to safely work at significant heights in towers, in confined nacelle spaces; in physically demanding roles; in remote onshore and offshore locations and demanding environments, travel to and from the site and self-evacuate in case of an emergency.
In line with the 2025 EI 3583 / OEUK guidelines, wind turbine medicals must be undertaken by the Oil and Energy UK-registered doctors. The EI / OEUK Certificate of Fitness for Wind Turbine Work is valid for up to two years and is accepted in the UK and internationally.
How to prepare for a wind turbine medical

✔ Select date, time, and book your wind turbine medical in Bristol or Chepstow clinic
✔ Complete the confidential Wind Turbine Worker Questionnaire (sent after booking).
✔ Bring a valid photo ID, any current prescriptions, your previous RUK certificate and glasses or contact lenses if used.
✔ For the Chester Step Test wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Do not eat, smoke or drink alcohol for 6 hours before the medical.
✔ See the Contact Page for details of our Bristol and Chepstow occupational health clinics.
Reschedule if you have a new cough, runny nose or fever.
What happens during a wind turbine medical
✔ The doctor will review your medical history
✔ You will have a physical examination, including weight, height, blood pressure, vision, grip strength assessment, and the Chester Step Test.
✔ If you are medically fit, the doctor will issue your Wind Turbine Certificate valid for up to 2 years.
In specific cases (e.g., type 1 diabetes, obesity, uncontrolled blood pressure), the guidelines require a letter from the GP, specialist, ECG, spirometry or other tests. Extra services will incur additional fees.
Certificate of fitness for wind turbine work
Depending on the findings, the examining doctor may issue:
✔ An Unrestricted Certificate valid for 2 years. This is the most common certificate issued to healthy workers.
✔ A Restricted Certificate valid for less than 2 years to ensure monitoring (e.g., in controlled high blood pressure, managed diabetes or other conditions which require review)

– Certificate of Temporary Unfitness issued if additional information or treatment is required before clearance. A certificate may be issued once the condition is resolved. Requests for medical reports incur additional costs.
– Certificate of Permanent Unfitness issued for workers with conditions incompatible with wind turbine work (e.g., significant cardiac impairment, severe permanent mobility limitations).
✔ Medical confidentiality: Employers receive only the Certificate of Fitness for Wind Turbine Work. All medical details remain confidential and are not shared without explicit employee consent. Confidential medical information is processed by authorised personnel only in compliance with GMC, GMP, and GDPR 2018 requirements.
Our expertise as wind turbine examiners in Bristol
10+ years of experience in RUK, OGUK, OEUK and safety-critical examinations
Dr Palka has been a registered Oil and Energy UK examining doctor since 2014. Having worked as an OGUK examiner and remote physician in Aberdeen, he understands the demanding physical and environmental challenges of wind farm work, both onshore and offshore. His experience includes multiple assessments of offshore workers, safety-critical workers, confined space and emergency evacuation scenarios, as well as supporting offshore clinicians and other OEUK examiners.
He is qualified to conduct EI 3583-compliant wind turbine medicals under the latest 2025 Energy Institute and OEUK guidelines. His extensive occupational health experience includes supporting the renewable energy, offshore, and other safety-critical roles.
Who needs a Wind Turbine Medical?
The employer determines requirements after risk assessment, but the following roles typically require wind turbine medicals:
→ Onshore and offshore wind turbine technicians and engineers, maintenance workers, service technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers working on turbine installations and repairs.
→ Installation and construction workers, tower erectors, blade installers, foundation workers, crane operators, and construction supervisors involved in wind farm development.
→ Site supervisors, quality assurance personnel, and emergency response team members.
→ Specialist roles, e.g., rope access technicians, NDT (non-destructive testing) specialists, electrical testing engineers, and commissioning engineers.
What if I am not fit for wind turbine work?
Consider occupational health referral

Employers may offer a redeployment to non-safety-critical roles for workers unable to meet wind turbine medical standards. Depending on the medical situation, this could be a temporary or permanent solution.
Your manager may refer you for an occupational health assessment. This will provide in-depth medical review and detailed recommendations for workplace adjustments, alternative duties, or supported return to work programmes.

FAQs: Offshore OEUK medical checks in Bristol
What is a wind turbine medical, and who needs it?
A wind turbine medical is a mandatory health assessment for renewable energy workers on onshore and offshore wind farms. It ensures workers are fit for height work, confined spaces, and physical demands. The EI 3583 certificate is valid for up to 2 years across UK and international wind sectors.
How much does a wind turbine medical cost in Bristol?
The comprehensive EI 3583 and OEUK-compliant wind turbine medical costs £245, including all tests, e.g., Chester Step Test, grip strength assessment, medical examination. Additional charges apply only if an additional medical report is required.
How long does a wind turbine medical take, and what tests are included?
The complete assessment takes 60 minutes, including medical history review, physical examination, vision and hearing tests, grip strength assessment, and Chester Step Test for cardiovascular fitness evaluation.
What happens if I’m deemed unfit for wind turbine work?
You may receive a Certificate of Temporary or Permanent Unfitness depending on the condition. Temporary unfitness can be reconsidered, if the medical problem (e.g., unstable diabetes) is resolved. In case of permanent unfitness, employers may consider redeployment to non-safety-critical work following an occupational health assessment.
Is my wind turbine certificate valid internationally ?
Yes, EI 3583 certificates are internationally recognised for onshore and offshore wind sectors.
Do you provide wind turbine medicals compliant with RUK (RenewableUK) and GWO (Global Wind Organisation)?
